Sarah Segal-Lazar is a multifaceted creative force, dazzling audiences as an award-winning writer, director, actor, and singer-songwriter.
An Honors BFA graduate from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, Sarah’s play THE BARELY WIVES CLUB was named a finalist for Red Bull Theatre’s Short New Plays Festival Off-Broadway right after she graduated. It has since gained acclaim and been produced across Canada. Concurrently, she made a sensational writing and directing debut in New York with her award-winning immersive musical TALK, MACKEREL, which enjoyed remounts in Montreal and NYC.
Her provocative play DON’T READ THE COMMENTS has been a trailblazer since its debut, winning the Segal Centre for Performing Arts 2018 award. It has been remounted five times, including at prestigious venues like the Segal Centre and the Centaur Theatre.
In 2014, the Montreal Gazette hailed her play IN MEMORIAM as one of the year’s best productions. Its 2021 remount was chosen for the Centaur Theatre’s Portico Project––one of Canada’s pioneering live theatre events during the pandemic. That same year, her play BAGGAGE was translated into French by the award-winning playwright and translator Gabrielle Chapdelaine for the esteemed Festival du Jamais Lu.
As an actor, Sarah has worked extensively onstage, as well as onscreen, including a standout performance in the extended, sold-out run of BAD JEWS at Montreal’s Segal Centre. The role earned her a Montreal English Theatre Awards nomination for Outstanding Lead Performance and led to additional productions in Montreal and Toronto. Sarah is also known as a voice actor, having worked in animation, dubbing, video games, and more.
Expanding her creative repertoire, Sarah’s short film ELVIRA, which she wrote and directed, received a FilmPEI Film4ward grant and comes out later this year.
As a singer-songwriter, Sarah’s music has been called “folk and country at its best.” Reviewers have described her songs as “simply mesmerizing” and “so gorgeous, they made the air go still.” Her latest album, VALLEYS, produced by Canadian folk luminary Matthew Barber, is out now. Sarah was nominated for Folk Music Ontario’s 2024 Recording Artist of the Year.
